First British edition, first printing; this is the first edition in English. [vi], [287], 24pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth, gilt to spine and front board. Near Fine with slight lean and crease to spine, boards slightly bowed, light foxing. Lacking the dust jacket. Extremely rare.

Originally published serially in Russia, this was translated into English by Nabokov in 1937. It sold few copies and the remaining stock was destroyed by bombs during WWII. A second English translation was serialized in Playboy 1965-66, and was then reprinted in book form. Field 728. Item #140949688
