One of the earliest Gastonia strike novels to be published, the story is based on what is also known as the Loray Mill strike, the 1929 North Carolina labor action aimed at the textile industry. Organized by the National Textile Workers Union, it quickly became violent; the resulting deaths of police chief O. F. Aderholt and Ella May Wiggins and the trials that followed were national news. Mary Heaton Vorse, a friend of John Dos Passos, served as a model for his character Mary French in his U. S. A. trilogy. An outstanding copy of this important novel. Rideout 174.
