First edition, with publisher's ads at rear dated December 1964. [v], 252, 24 pp. Bound in publisher's blindstamped purple triangular cloth lettered in gilt on spine, brown coated endpapers. Near Fine with sunning and shallow chipping to spine. Light foxing and dampstaining to first 2 leaves, variable faint dampstain to lower margin corner of final third of textblock, overopened at several places. Pencil inscriptions to front pastedown and front free endpaper verso, ownership stamp and horizontal tear to back endpapers. Borst A5.1.a.
Henry David Thoreau visited Cape Cod four times between 1849 and 1857. He gave several lectures and wrote a few articles about his experiences, but his full writings weren't published until three years after his death. The first edition had a small print run of 2,000 copies, but the book has never been out of print since and has influenced numerous nature writers, including John Muir.
