Seamus Heaney was a guest lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, during the academic year of 1970-71. In this inscription he quotes the lines of the Poet in the first act of Shakespeare's Timon of Athens, who speaks of the art that oozes, like sap from a tree, from the creator.
