The Snowy Day
New York: The Viking Press, 1962.
First edition, first printing. 34 pp. Bound in publisher's light blue cloth stamped in white and red; publisher's library binding variant, though not a former library copy. Near Fine with light toning to boards, tiny scattered stains to upper and lower board and textblock edges at corners, and child's bookplate to front free endpaper. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with "Viking Library Binding" sticker to front and spine panels and related text printed to front flap. Light wear and toning, several small faint stains, and tear to tail of spine (visible on verso) from previous owner's attempt to remove "Library Binding" sticker.
The timeless story of a small boy enjoying his snowy day outdoors, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal. First printings appear in blue cloth with and without the stamp to the rear board, and we know of no priority. The book and jacket confirm to all first edition points: lithographer's name misspelled on copyright page, no additional printings mentioned, and no mention of the Caldecott Medal. Zielinski p. 155.
