The second edition of Arthur Huff Fauset's juvenile history of prominent Black Americans, first published in 1927. Fauset was a writer, anthropologist, and civil rights activist who spent years working in Philadelphia public schools. His groundbreaking book argued the essential contributions of African-Americans to their country's history. Fauset wrote in the preface:

"It is told in the spirit of young folk because they, more than any of us, are able to re-live the lives and struggles of heroic characters with that innocence and fidelity of interpretation which are so essential to a true understanding of the elements which underlie human aspiration."
