A very sharp copy of a beautifully designed book. Azuela's classic novel of the Mexican Revolution was informed by his own experience as a doctor with the forces of Pancho Villa. The translation published by the bookstore chain Brentano's was a hit in the United States — some reviewers were shaken by the violence, but as the San Francisco Chronicle noted, any reader who had survived All Quiet on the Western Front was prepared for brutality. Each novel serves as an entry point to a world-changing conflict, and each holds a prominent place in the canon of world literature.
