The first edition of the first sociological study of a black community in the United States. W.E.B. Du Bois spent months interviewing members of 2,500 households in Philadelphia's Seventh Ward and synthesized his research into a monumental work as impassioned as it was methodical. Du Bois was assisted in his work by Isabel Eaton, who focused on women in domestic service. This copy was owned by Adelaide M. Cromwell, also an influential sociologist and professor. She was the first Black teacher at Smith College and went on to teach at Boston University for more than 30 years. Item #140948958
