The Master and Margarita

New York: Harper & Row, 1967.

First American edition, first printing. vi, 394 pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth with red and gilt lettering to spine, mustard yellow topstain and endpapers. Near Fine with very light rubbing and fading to head and tail of spine and small abrasion to half-title page. In a Near Fine price-clipped dust jacket with very light toning and edgewear; spine panel uncommonly bright.

A fantastic copy of the famous dark comedy and romance. A visit from the Devil turns Moscow upside down, while lovely Margarita attempts to save the work of the writer she loves. The persecuted Bulgakov knew he could never publish the book in his lifetime, and his widow kept the manuscript in a drawer until 1966. The first American edition features Mercer Mayer's illustration of the Devil's companion Behemoth, decked out for a witches' ball in gilded whiskers and a satin bow tie. Item #140948884
