The persecuted Bulgakov knew he could never publish the book in his lifetime, and his widow kept the manuscript in a drawer until 1966. The first American edition features Mercer Mayer's illustration of the Devil's companion Behemoth, decked out for a witches' ball in gilded whiskers and a satin bow tie.
