Trial and Speeches of Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman in the United States District Court, in the City of New York, July, 1917 (Anarchism on Trial)
New York: Mother Earth Publishing Assocation, 1917.
First edition. 87, [9; ads] pp., with 2 portraits of Berkman and Goldman. Bound in publisher's light brown printed wraps. Near Fine with shallow chipping to spine eds, light foxing to wraps, faint creasing to top corner of cover and contents and oxidation to staples with associated rust staining. An uncommonly nice copy of a pamphlet following the arrest and prosecution of anarchist leaders Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Published by Goldman's anarchist publication Mother Earth, the work outlines the rabble-rousing duo's trial following their 1917 arrest for violating the Espionage Act. Both were vehemently outspoken against conscription and the United States' entry into WWI, and eventually they were imprisoned, fined $10,000, and deported to Russia. The trials were a flashpoint for the First Amendment and set an unwavering precedent for deporting individuals based on their social views and opinions, a key part of the broader government efforts during the First Red Scare to target political dissidents.
