First American edition, first printing. [x], 279 pp illustrated with black and white photographs. Bound in publisher's terracotta cloth with spine lettered in gilt; dark red topstain. Near Fine with light toning to spine and edges with slight tarnishing to gilt lettering. In a Very Good unclipped inclusion paper dust jacket with fading to spine, rear panel and top edge of front panel, neatly restored with Japanese paper particularly at crown and joints. Greene's literary travelogue of his 1938 trip Mexico where he bore witness to anti-Catholic secularization uprisings surrounding the Cristero War. The trip would later inspire him to pen his 1940 novel The Power and the Glory or The Labyrinthine Ways. Published in the United Kingdom under the title The Lawless Roads in the same year.
