First edition. Number 183 of a limited 600 copies, signed by Frans Masereel in pencil on the limitation page at the front. Recased, publisher's tan paper covered boards lettered in black laid down on tan cloth spine. Very Good with chipping and light soiling to original boards. Former owner's bookplate and stamped number "23" on front pastedown, light soiling to half title, faint offsetting from plates. The Belgian artist's allegorical wordless novel following an everyman in a modernizing city through series of Expressionist-inspired woodcuts. Though framed much like a silent film through sequence and viewpoints the reader is ultimately left to determine the meaning of the plot to themselves.
