Very Good+ with a little lean to spine and light rubbing and soiling to cloth; hinges starting. Contents lightly toned, gift inscription dated 1901 and bookplate to front free endpaper. Rare in commerce in the first issue.
The autobiography of the famous orator and educator, beginning with his childhood in slavery and ending with a report on the Tuskegee Institute, which Washington founded. This copy was given by the newspaper editor Arnold Guyot Dana to his daughter Henrietta Silliman Dana upon her twelfth birthday.
