First edition, first printing of Norman Maclean's collection of three stories about the American West. Signed by Maclean on the front free endpaper and inscribed to previous owners Barbara and Bob, "Who share me [sic] with me a love of the west and western waters and the religious belief they should be fished only with flies." Dated Aug. 9, 19[7]9, with a "2" mistakenly written for "7."

xiv, 217 pp. Bound in publisher's sky blue cloth lettered in silver on the spine. Near Fine with slight lean to spine and softening at head and tail, and stain to fore edge of textblock. Previous owner bookplate to front pastedown. In a Very Good price-clipped dust jacket with light edgewear and soiling, moderate toning to extremities, short closed tear at upper left of front panel, and dampstain around tail of spine. Small ink scribble to front flap verso not visible on recto.

The first book of fiction published by the University of Chicago, nominated for the 1977 Pulitzer Prize. Robert Redford's 1992 movie adaption of the title story launched Brad Pitt's career and sparked a brief fly fishing craze. Item #140947701
