The rare first American appearance of Dostoyevsky's enduringly-popular novel, anonymously translated from Victor Derely's French translation of 1884; Line, Ettlinger, and Gladstone write that it is erroneously ascribed to Whishaw and give precedence to the British issue of Vizetelly. It is widely considered one of the masterworks of world literature.
