A fantastic collection of ephemera compiled at the dawn of cinema that includes photographs, screenplays and ephemera related to British-born American silent era film actor/director Arthur Mackley. Included are 13 scripts (including "A Little Bit of Heaven," "A Tear from the Battlefield," "A Sealskin Sacque," Mrs. Timothy Tate" and more), three original character studies by Mackely, five state production photos, eleven signed/unsigned actor headshots, nine stills from films, four manuscripts, two play bills & five related publications/periodicals. Arthur Mackley (1865–1926) was a silent-era film star and director who appeared in 150 films around 1913-15. He personally directed 64 films between 1911-1915. This collection features stills from The Honor System where Mackley portrayed a sheriff, a role he would play over and over again earning him the nickname "Sheriff" Mackley. Autographed actor headshots include silent film heavy hitters like Lillian Lawrence (1868-1926), Jack O'Brien (1884-1936), Vedah Bertram (1891-1912) and Cora Drew (b.1871-72-?). This archive features many play production pieces dating to the 1890's before the era of moving pictures. Photographs of elaborate play stages, theater scripts and playbills are included. The archive covers the exciting era where the stage became on screen, and the talents and experiences of stage actors and directors shaped the very first generation of motion pictures.
