Inside the Whale
London: Victor Gollancz, 1940.
First edition, first printing. 188pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth lettered in yellow; lacking dust jacket. Very Good with rubbing to edges and modest soiling. Remnants of former owner's book plate on front pastedown. Orwell's uncommon first published collection of essays, containing pieces on Dickens and boys' weeklies as well as the titular piece on Henry Miller and contemporary literature. As many Orwell fans will attest, his nonfiction (while less well known than 1984 and Animal Farm) is excellent.
Price: $1,500
