Five Eyes
Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1979.
First edition. 145, [2] pp. Bound in publisher's illustrated boards with red cloth backstrip, paper title label. Fine in original acetate wrapper, slightly cloudy. A collection of stories by five Moroccan authors, all except Choukri's being spoken texts only. American novelist and composer Paul Bowles transcribed them, his writing talents coming in handy to create a very different sort of short story than American readers are typically used to: very unpretentious and oddly entrancing. Mrabet, Choukri, and Layachi (initially writing as Driss Ben Hamed Charhadi) all wrote a number of books, most translated by Bowles.
