No Place: No Publisher, 1914-1925.

Second Edition, Revised, Corrected and Enlarged by the Author. (Issue unclear. For a long time thought to be the first book appearance of the first part due to extreme scarcity of first edition. First appearance of the continuation Captive Maiden(s)-- chapter headings belie the title's plural, or is the other way around?) 2 parts in 1. [iv], 232 pp. No portrait. Original tan printed wrappers. housed in a custom brown cloth box with clear plastic lid. Good. Light wrinkling throughout text, small light tidemark at terminals, light foxing to fore and top edges, wraps soiled.

An odd memoir of a trek from Missouri to California in 1854, return in 1860, and a second in 1865 transmogrified into a fictional account for young readers, notable for its scarcity. For many years most copies were assumed to have perished in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, though this is now considered highly unlikely. Howes N-213. Item #171003004

Price: $1,200.00
