First British edition and first English translation of Russia's greatest narrative poem. xxiv, [4], 276 pp., pages uncut. Bound in publisher's dark green cloth stamped in gilt, coated endpapers. Near Fine with darkening and slight lean to spine, light rubbing to cloth, light bumping to corners, and minor staining to upper edge of textblock. Front hinge just starting, very light scattered foxing to contents. Spalding's landmark translation was the only complete English rendition of Pushkin's novel in verse for 50 years. Peter France in his The Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translation writes, "By common acknowledgement it represents Russian at its finest," and singles out this translation as "the most remarkable of all translations."
