When Prophecy Fails
Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 1956.
First edition. viii, 256 pp. Bound in publisher's original orange cloth with black lettering. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket, a little rubbed, spine panel slightly sunned. Surprisingly uncommon in the original jacket. The first book appearance of a noteworthy sociological examination of a Chicago UFO group, the Seekers (led by contactee and channeler Dorothy Martin) and the development of their shared worldview in the face of events that blatantly contradict their beliefs-- in this case the epic flood that was to destroy much of the world on December 21, 1954. A famous example of co-author Leon Festinger's theory of "cognitive dissonance."
Price: $750
