Petrus Apianus’s (1495-1552) first major work and one of the most influential and popular works on geography. It was the first major treatise to base geography on measurement and mathematics. Initially published in 1524, it went through no fewer than 45 editions, this edition printed in Antwerp, a hub of printing during the Renaissance. Bedecked with fantastic woodcuts depicting scientific instruments such as an astrolabe, an armillary sphere and portable time telling devices. Sabin notes that Chapter 4 relates to America.
