First edition, first printing, issue with no frontispiece, leaves on spine stem down. BAL's State A with no printer's imprint on copyright page, no priority. vi, 234 pp. Bound in publisher's dark olive cloth with red and black stamping. Near Fine with trivial wear at tips, a little rubbing to red on spine, former owner's name stamped on paste down and front free endpaper. A sharp, attractive copy. In much nicer shape then generally found. The first book publication of the black-humor classic The Devil's Dictionary, which began as a series of newspaper columns. It covers letters "A" through "L"; a sequel was planned but sales were too poor to justify it. The full alphabet would be published five years later.
