Contact Collection of Contemporary Writers (Angel Flores's copy)

Paris: Contact Editions, [1925].

First edition. [vi], 338, [1] pp. Bound in publisher's wraps. Very Good with soiling to wraps, chipping at spine ends, spine maybe have been repaired with glue at some point, toning to pages, bookplate, a few stray marginal marks (presumably those of Flores). Wear to front free endpaper with interior chip from removed bookplate or something similar.

Puerto Rican writer and critic Angel Flores's copy with his name written on front free endpaper, dated Feb. 2,1926, Princeton. According to his papers, Flores (1900-1994) "navigated both the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking worlds of literature. He was one of the early translators of Pablo Neruda into English; he was the original Spanish translator for T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. He was a friend of Federico Garcia Lorca. Flores is credited with being the first person to apply the term 'magical realism' to literature." (We were unable to verify the latter claim.) An nice association copy, as Flores would be active in mid to late 20th century literature, and this is a noteworthy early anthology of modernism with many heavyweights such as Hemingway, Pound, Barnes, Williams, Stein, Joyce, etc. Item #140944862
