The first collection of the American anarchist Voltairine de Cleyre's political writings, poetry, and short fiction, published nearly two years after her death at age 45. While she is still obscure, many of her essays and arguments have weathered well-- showing her trajectory from abolitionism and the individualist anarchism that informed its radical wing (not a well-known fact today) to an iconoclastic feminist anarchism. Her 1912 essay "Direct Action," included here, is one of her best-known essays, grounding an appeal for anarchist direct action in America's conflicted history rather than the nuances of academic philosophy or the doctrines of Karl Marx.
