Boston: James Munroe, 1841.
First edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's original dark brown ribbed cloth with elaborate blindstamped front and back boards, spine lettered in gilt, cream endpapers. Very Good with light staining to cloth primarily at the foot of the spine and top edge of the rear board. Wear to extremities and gnawing to edge of about half of the the lower board, affecting the upper board and several leaves as well. Cigar smoke odor to pages, evidence of bookplate removal to front pastedown with former owner's pencil notation there as well and binder's inkless emboss to front free endpaper. Still a very attractive unsophisticated copy, quite rare thus.
The first series of Emerson's essays, including the truly classic "Self-Reliance" and "The Over-Soul."
