First edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's blue paper-covered boards lettered in gilt on the upper board. Near Fine with light edge wear and toning to pages. Uncommon in the first edition, this was later reprinted by Harper & Brothers. Howard Thurman (1900-1981) was the first black dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University and co-founder of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, California, the first inter-racially copastored church in America. Kirkus Reviews called this book "a beautifully written, sensitive and moving interpretation of the spiritual, social and political aspirations of the American Negroes as they are expressed in the spirituals."
