First thus. Signed by Samuel Leigh Sotheby on blank page at front, warmly inscribed to his friend D. [M.?] Leighton, Nov. 20, 1840. Bound in black leather with dark cloth sides, ruled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. a Fair copy; ex-library (noncirculating) with call number written on spine, bookplates on paste down, perforation to title page. Large head chip, edge wear, front gutter cracked but holding, contents toned and lightly worn. Five leaves' upper corners reattached with tape. A limited edition written by the third and final generation of the Sotheby family to run the famous Sotheby's auction house. According to OCLC this work was first published in 1839 as Observations upon the Handwriting of Philip Melanchthon; this is the first edition with this title and an additional plate. Item #140943982
