One of Du Bois' major works, a revisiting of the reconstruction period as a critical time of Black advancement in American society and a near-revolution of anti-racism and societal change. In portraying the period in this way he was clashing with the academic orthodoxy and popular conceptions of the time. In the 21st century it has been given renewed attention and called "the foundational text of revisionist African American historiography."
