First edition, first printing. Signed by Howard Thurman on the title page. Bound in publisher's blue paper-covered boards lettered in gilt on the upper board. Near Fine with toning to spine, edges of boards and lightly so to pages, in a Very Good dust jacket, chipped at edges, tiny interior chip with stain, starting along folds. Uncommon in the first edition, this was later reprinted by Harper & Brothers.

Howard Thurman (1900-1981) was the first black dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University and co-founder of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, California, the first inter-racially copastored church in America. Kirkus Reviews called this book "a beautifully written, sensitive and moving interpretation of the spiritual, social and political aspirations of the American Negroes as they are expressed in the spirituals."
