The North Dakota Votes for Women League was organized in 1911 and held their first state convention the following year in Fargo. The first statewide referendum on women's suffrage took place in 1914 but failed. In 1917 women gained the right to vote in municipal and presidential elections in North Dakota. The state became the 20th state to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1919.
