First edition. Signed by James Churchward on the page preceding the half title, inscribed to reviewer Mrs. C.H. Shivvers. Postmarked envelope from Churchward to Shivvers mounted to preceding verso, single ALS folded and placed inside. Dated May 6, 1930, Churchward describes happily receiving her enthusiastic review and enclosing this signed copy to have his publishers (Ives Washburn Inc. at the time) send. Their letter to that effect is laid in in a postmarked envelope. A three page note, handwritten on the back of Shell Oil Co. blank forms, is included; possibly it is by Shivvers. Her laudatory notations and corrections are in the margins of the book in pencil. [xii], 316 pp. Publisher's blue boards with black cloth backstrip, lettered in gilt. A Near Fine copy, lacking jacket. An interesting association copy.
The British author's first book on the sunken continent of Mu, a Pacific equivalent of Atlantis, published when he was 75 years old. While generally regarded as a hoaxer, he would go on to write five more books on the subject, and inspire numerous writers and artists long after his death.
