New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.
First trade edition, first printing. Contains all three agreed upon first issue points: Page 9 with "Decided" (later changed to "Decides"); page 13, illustration captioned "Him and another Man" listed as on page 88; page 57, 11th line from bottom reads "with the was," instead of "with the saw". Other bibliographical points to note found in this copy include: page 143, the text begins "Co Grangerford", missing the the "l.", should be "Col. Grangerford", and on line 7 (same page), "oody" should be "body" as part of the hyphenated word "nobody" between the end of line 6 and the first word of line 7; page 155 has the page number "155" with the second "5" as slightly larger probably hand-stamped in (some copies show only "15"; the added "5" appears in random copies of all states); and page 161, no signature mark "11" on bottom. Portrait bust without cloth visible (apparently cloth is visible on both first and later state copies) with "Heliotype Printing Co." on lower left-hand corner. As to issue points resulting from damaged plates (e.g. the dropped "5" on p 155), MacDonnell concludes, "they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets. All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating process" ("Huck Finn" Firsts Magazine).
