First edition, first printings, the third volume with signature mark present and lines of type sagging on page 49 (designated by Hammond as a first state in his bibliography, but later revised by him to second state.) Bound in publisher's original red cloth with spines stamped in gilt, with folding maps at rear of each volume illustrated by Christopher Tolkien. Very Good. Lean to bindings. Volume II with dark spot to cloth at front board and a little cloth bleed from rear cover to rear endsheets carrying through to foot of final textual page, and to rear flap and verso of of dust jacket. Dust jackets are unclipped, lightly chipped, edge-worn and soiled, with spines toned and scuffed; jacket of the first volume is partially split to the lower one-third of the front flap fold. An attractive copy in uniform condition of Tolkien's epic fantasy masterpiece. Item #140940390
