The Power Elite

New York: Oxford University Press, 1956.

Signed by sociologist C. Wright Mills on front free endpaper, inscribed to left-wing writer Ella Winter and dated 26 May '61. Both Mills and Winter were die-hard radicals and critics of American imperialism; Winter was married to both muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens and humorist Donald Ogden-Stewart.

Postcard from Ella Winter on her stationary dated Dec 17, 1970 addressed to Roger Luxton-Jones, Advertising Manager of the London Times, gifting him the book. She writes of it, "It may have been published in England also - I do not know. But you can see why I treasure it. And I have ordered a new copy for you from USA but of course that will take 4-6 weeks, and I can't wait, as to your cost you know. [initialed] E."

[vi], 423 pp. Publisher's black cloth with metallic silver and purple stamping. First edition, third printing. A Very Good copy with a little dampstaining to margins at front of book, light rubbing, a few penciled brackets in margins, in a Good only jacket with chips, dampstaining to verso, single underline on front flap. A rare signature from the sociologist and Columbia University professor who popularized the term "New Left"; when he died at age 45 in 1962 he was already something of a celebrity and his body of work had informed popular culture as well as the discipline of sociology. The Power Elite is one of his best-known works, an examination of the 1% who drove American domestic and foreign policy and culture in the Cold War. Item #140940114
