First edition, first printing with five line colophon with "Bound by H. Wolff, New York." Near Fine with cloth faintly spine faded, lightly wrinkled at rear cover. Rear corner bumped. In a Near Fine dust jacket with publisher's price of $3.95 intact and no ISBN on the rear panel, with light edge wear, toning and foxing, small stain to spine, extending onto rear panel. The author's first book for children. This edition preceded the better-known British edition by a full six years, and features color illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert, different from that edition, as well as a subtitle that was later dropped.
