The first English language edition, translated from the third German edition of Wegener's seminal 1912 work in which he postulates the theory of continental drift, hypothesizing that the contents are slowly drifting around the Earth. A controversial idea which was widely rejected by the scientific community at the time, it was not taken seriously until the mid-20th century when new developments in Paleomagnetism began to yield data in support of Wegener's theory. Today, the evidence is quite extensive, substantiated by fossil records showing similar plants and animals on the shores of different continents, suggesting they were once conjoined. Though Wegener was not the first to look at the globe and surmise the continents looked like fitting jigsaw puzzle pieces--that South America could fit closely to Africa, North America to Europe and that Antarctica, Australia, India and Madagascar fit next to the tip of southern Africa--he was the first to use the phrase "continental drift" and is largely considered the originator and chief proponents of the idea.
