A Fine copy in Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with tiny closed tear in and slight crease to front panel, bright and attractive. A historical novel of African American life in the postbellum South, which inspired a popular made-for-TV movie that preceded the better-known Roots by three years. The author passed away recently; he is also known for his prize-winning 1993 novel A Lesson Before Dying.
