(The Count of Monte Cristo) The Chateau D'If: A Romance, & The Count of Monte Christo, with George: or the Planter of the Isle of France

Belfast, Ireland: Simms and McIntyre, 1846.

First English language edition of The Count of Monte Cristo, preceding the slightly more common London edition of Chapman & Hall with an anonymous translator. Also the first Irish edition. 19th century polished calf with marbled-paper sides, ruled and decorated in gilt with raised bands on spine, black title labels lettered in gilt, matching marbled edges and endpapers. The Chateau D'If: A Romance [iv], 400 pp, bound with The Count of Monte Christo Vol. 1 [3]-448 pp; The Count of Monte Christo Vol. II 464 pp, bound with George: or the Planter of the Isle of France [3]-384 pp. Four parts in two volumes. The first three parts comprise the complete novel The Count of Monte Cristo; the second volume bound with Dumas' novella George translated by G.J. Knox, same publisher and year. Very Good with rubbing along edges of calf, a few tiny chips to paper sides, front and rear hinges of both volumes a little overopened but holding, small spots of sticker wear to front free endpapers, occasional offsetting to contents, some corner creasing. A rare, attractive example of the classic French adventure novel. Item #140939257
