The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Boston: Sherman, French & Company, 1912.

First edition, first printing. Publisher's ribbed dark maroon cloth stamped in gilt. Near Fine with spine lightly faded and cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities. Staple puncture to front free endpaper. Written while serving as a diplomat, Johnson originally opted to publish this book anonymously out of fear the fear that writing openly about race relations and discrimination would impact his career. A fictional account, whose sales were sluggish at first on account of it being read as an autobiography as opposed to a novel, rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance. Scarce.
