Mottoes Everybody Loves

New York: Esquire Inc., 1946.

Five 7.25 x 9” sheets on stiff cardboard, laid in a 9 x 10”textured portfolio cover with two metal-lined holes on back cover. Distributed to readers by Coronet Magazine in 1945-1946, “as a token of our appreciation for your patronage.” Very Good+ with lightly bumped corners of sheets. Portfolio lightly edge-worn and soiled, small tear on back cover where metal ring popped through.

Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk was commissioned to illustrated mottos by Confucius, George Horace Lorimer and Thackeray, plus one of the “Lord’s Prayer” after he won fame for the unique style of his striking anti-Nazi graphics during World War II. Vera Bock contributed one for a quote by Carl Schurz.
