A survey of medicine by an Irish physician most-often remembered for two works on the heart-- A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest (1837) and The Diseases of the Heart and Aorta (1854)-- as well as an early book on the use of the stethoscope. He was a firm believer in the unity of all the sciences within medicine, and was generally opposed to specialization.
