Sonnets for Caresse
Paris: Albert Messein, 1926.
Third edition. #31 of 108 copies on Arches paper. [8], 48, [1] pp. Hand-painted veined vellum binding with hand-inked title and small flower decoration to spine, hand-painted green and gold ruled border to front and rear boards, bevelled fore-edge, gilt and multi-toned maroon marbled endpapers. Original wraps bound-in including spine as stub.
Inscribed "Happy 1927 Aunt Martha + Uncle Levin [?] from [signed] Caresse / a Paris" on blank preceding front wrap. Beneath that Martha apparently regifted the book to one "L.B.J." (clearly not the Texan president!). Very Good+ with toning to vellum, boards slightly bowed; some loss to spine ends, small edge chip to front wrap. A fascinating production of what would later become Crosby's famed Black Sun Press.
