London: Geoffrey Cumberlege / Oxford University Press, 1949.

Second edition. Signed by Walter Y. Evans-Wentz and inscribed to a former owner, "With very good wishes to Louise Evans, [signed] W. Y. Evans-Wentz / Santa Barbara December 16, 1950." University of California professor D.M. Brown, who drove many times over the hills and canyons above Santa Barbara with a septuagenarian Evans-Wentz as he scouted for property to build an ashram, recalled "Occasionally he brought a woman (Louise Evans) with him of middle age who seemed to be a person of some means and who was very interested in the possibilities of an ashram. My guess is that she had offered to purchase some property for this purpose."

Bound in publisher's original green cloth with gilt lettering and decorations. Fine, with faint soiling to textblock edge, top corner of upper board bumped. In a Near Fine price-clipped dust jacket with edge wear, light toning and light soiling. The American folklorist and religious scholar W.Y Evans-Wentz first translated the Tibetan Buddhist text the Bardo Thodol, into English in in 1920s. Its title was invented by Wentz due to its similarities with the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, and like that work this one has become a widely-read and studied classic of world spirituality.
