Gift inscription by former owners as well, dated in the year of publication; they could possibly have been members of the lesbian group Daughters of Bilitis, at meetings of which the author often passed out copies.

This historical novel based on the lives of 19th century American folk artist Mary Ann Willson and her lover Miss Brundidge became an iconic lesbian book of the 1970s when McGraw-Hill republished it as Patience and Sarah. It won the first Stonewall Book Award in 1971. Item #140938883
