The Fallen Leaves

London: Chatto & Windus, 1879.

First edition. Three volumes, bound in later half morocco by Riviere, red cloth sides, gilt decorations and spine lettering, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. W.A. Foyle bookplate on paste downs, tips a little rubbed, else Fine. Third volume bound without half-title, no ads in second volume. A lovely copy of one of Collins' scarcest novels.

Andrew Gasson writes, "The 'Fallen Leaves' of the title are 'The people who have drawn blanks in the lottery of life... the friendless and the lonely, the wounded and the lost.' The novel was not well recieved and a planned Second Series, showing an unconventional marriage failing because of outside pressures, was never written. The novel follows the fortunes of four women, all in one way or another 'fallen leaves,' who are linked by their relationships with the hero, Amelius Goldenheart, and also by secrets from the past."
