London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1846.
First edition, second issue with a cancelled title page. Bound in near contemporary full calf without the single advert leaf occasionally appearing before the title page, the errata slip which usually occurs, and the publisher's catalogue at the rear which was present in some copies. Nearly imperceptible reback to spine. Marbled endsheets, with a small, circular previous owner bookplate to front paste down. The first work in print by the Bronte sisters--Charlotte, Emily and Anne--purposely published under masculine pseudonyms to avoid contemporary prejudices against female authors. Item #140937845
