On Thermonuclear War
Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1960.
First edition. Inscribed by Herman Kahn to former owners, "To Sally and Roger Eaton, In honor of our unfinished [?] frontier - both Canadian and Soviet. [signed] Herman Kahn." xx, 651 pp. Original maroon cloth lettered in gilt, ruled in black. Near Fine with foxed edges and light edge-rubbing, in unclipped dust jacket with small chips at head, tear to foot, else Near Fine, toned spine panel. An attractive signed copy of an elegantly-designed book.
One of the most influential academic works of the cold war, which made its author an instant celebrity. Kahn's recent biographer Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi said the book "hums with motifs of world cataclysm, resurrection, and miracle," likening its frank, varied, jocular expository style to that of an epic poem. It would be parodied in the classic Stanley Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove.
